RECESSED PLATFORM BEDS

LOCATION | Grand Rapids, MI

Project Description

A traditional bed includes a footboard in lieu of the “end-rail” found in a platform bed. The height of the footboard can above the top of the mattress, even with it, or below it. But it rises above the side-rails and matches the headboard design.

The traditional bed has changed. Mattresses needed box springs to give greater comfort as the mattress was simply “fill” consisting mostly of cotton. The combination of box spring and mattress gave the greatest comfort, and combined for a thickness of about 16 to 20 inches. But with the addition of springs in the mattress, the advances in the comfort of the mattress, and the mattress’s increased thickness, box springs are becoming more obsolete and an unnecessary expense. The Custom Cottage Traditional Bed replaces the box spring’s support with 3/4 inch plywood or solid maple wooden slats resting on two side rails (and a center rail with a king size bed). The side rails are firmly attached to the headboard and footboard in a secure and interlocking way that creates a solid “rattle free” bed. The Traditional Bed can be used with Sleep Number and memory foam mattresses.

Typically we like a 3:2 ratio of height of headboard to height of mattress top, but every customer has a unique bedroom. Some rooms have windows that must be worked around or an attic ceiling that is very low at the wall line. Customers also have different preferences for a footboard. Some like the footboard below the mattress, while others like it above or level with the mattress. The height of the mattress top and room for storage space below the bed are just a few of the designs that customers can define as they create their own custom cottage style bedroom.
